Naturopathic medicine can help you optimize your digestive health which can have far-reaching benefits to other bodily systems.
Hippocrates, considered the father of modern medicine once stated that “All disease begins in the gut”. Although not entirely accurate, the gut has been linked to many conditions.
The gut has been an interest of mine since undertaking my Master’s in a laboratory that studies the microbiome (all the microorganisms that live on and in us). Typical gut conditions include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), constipation, diarrhea, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and acid reflux, all of which can lead to significant long-term health issues if not solved early.
Research on the gut microbiome and its importance for optimal health has exploded in the last decade. Not only can the trillions of microorganisms in our gut affect digestive health but they can also impact our cardiovascular and mental health and play a role in controlling blood sugar levels and diabetes.
Factors that can affect gut health include food, exercise, sleep and stress along with taking quality supplements when indicated.
